Development and premiere
Project start: In 1985 by the newly founded BMW Technik GmbH under the direction of Ulrich Bez.Idea: The car was to serve as a mobile laboratory for new materials, lightweight construction and innovative vehicle concepts. IAA 1987: The sensation at the Frankfurt Motor Show, where BMW showed a two-seater sports car for the first time in decades (since the BMW 507). Special featuresRecessed doors: The doors moved electrically downwards into the wide side skirts. Driving with the doors open or recessed was officially allowed. Plastic skin: The body parts were made of thermoplastic and were screwed together – theoretically, the car could be completely "undressed". Chassis: For the first time, a centrally point-guided double wishbone rear axle (the so-called Z-axis) was used, which later went into mass production. Technical data and productionEngine: 2.5-litre in-line six-cylinder (from the 325i) with 170 hp (125 kW). Performance: 0 to 100 km/h in 7.9 seconds, top speed 225 km/h.End of production: Production ended in June 1991 after exactly 8,000 units. Today, the Z1 is considered a sought-after classic and a trailblazer for successor models such as the Z3 and Z4.
