Here we are offering a very beautiful and rare 1959 Porsche 356 Convertible D. This roadster was produced in a limited series of just 1,330 units as the direct successor to the legendary Porsche 356 Speedster, manufactured by the body shop Drauz in Heilbronn. The car has been in its current owner’s possession for 30 years and was imported to Germany from Oregon, USA, in 1992. Here, the vehicle underwent extensive restoration, both to the body and mechanically. In 2001, the Porsche was fitted with a performance-enhanced engine based on the 356 C, at a cost of just under 25,000 DM. The original engine is also included and can be purchased separately. Over the years, of course, further investments have been made in the car; we have the corresponding service records on file.
The Evolution: Speedster vs. Convertible D
The original Speedster was built for sunny California—without real weather protection and extremely spartan. The Convertible D made the open-top sports car suitable for everyday use: Real crank-operated windows: Instead of the Speedster’s impractical snap-in windows, the Convertible D featured crank-operated glass side windows. Taller windshield: A taller, chrome-plated windshield frame improved wind protection and provided better upward visibility. Greater comfort: The interior was fitted with thicker, more comfortably padded seats instead of the hard bucket seats. Soft top: The fabric convertible top remained lightweight and unlined, but closed much more tightly thanks to the new frame. Rarity and Collector’s Value: Since the model was produced for only a single year before being replaced for the 1960 model year by the visually modified 356 B Roadster, the Convertible D is now considered an absolute rarity. A large portion of the production was exported to the U.S. at the time.
